It started out as a simple hobby when, lo and behold, I realized I have just accumulated 20,000 distinct toy characters in my collection... and the number is still growing. This blog is a great space to share to others just how amazing some of these characters are especially the ones that may have been forgotten or perhaps even those deemed insignificant. Visit Percy's World of Toys as often as you can and witness how the list progresses right before your eyes. Enjoy.

Gund is a manufacturer of plush stuffed animals. It was founded by Adolph Gund in 1898 and is the oldest manufacturer of plush toys in the U.S. On July 1, 2008 Gund was sold to Enesco, a gift company known for among other things the Cherished Teddies line.
Gund created many of the industry standards today including safety standards and the manufacturing processes for toys.[citation needed] Sweldin, who bought the company from Gund when he retired in 1925, became the first licensor of cartoon characters, producing plush toy versions of Popeye, Mickey Mouse, Felix the Cat, and Tigger.[citation needed]
Gund became one of the 50 most recognized companies in America in the 1980s[citation needed] marketing the brand slogan, "Gotta Getta Gund."
In the 1980s, Gund had an extremely successful launch with Snuffles, a polar like bear with black eyes, sueded nose and a sewn thread mouth. Snuffles was offered in White, Tan, Brown, and Pink. They also offered a Platinum Edition which had white and silver like fur. Gund recently celebrated the 25th Anniversary of Snuffles and introduced a Giant Snuffles which was nearly twice the size of the one which made the brand famous. Gund products were always more expensive than those offered via mass retailers, but they became the gold standard as their quality was exceptional versus brands like Commonwealth, Dakin, and Russ Berrie. 1980s Gund plush and older still have a viable retail market thanks to eBay and other websites.
Today Gund sells over 1500 products including Gund, Baby Gund, Gund Bears, Gund Snuffles teddy bears, and Gund Holiday. Gund is known for under-stuffing their products to make them softer than competing teddy bears. It also makes the "Barnsie" bear, made exclusively for Barnes & Noble.

GUND was founded by German immigrant Adolf Gund in Norwalk Connecticut in 1898. Using the best fabrics available he built a reputation that distinguished the company from its competition. When he retired in 1925, he sold the business to Jacob Swedlin with the understanding that the name and principles of GUND would always remain.
Mr. Swedlin passed control of the company to his daughter Rita and her husband Herbert Raiffe in 1969. It was during their tenure that GUND developed the trademarked manufacturing techniques that make GUND plush truly “The World’s Most Huggable”.
Bruce Raiffe became the third generation to run the company in 1993. Over the next decade, GUND expanded into international markets, and acquired in-demand licensed properties.
In 2008, Enesco, a leader in the gift and home décor industry, acquired GUND. Operating as a division of the Enesco family of brands, GUND continues to build and expand upon a century of tradition.
Today, GUND is a worldwide operation headquartered in Edison, New Jersey.
The American Brand Council, comprised of some the nation’s most eminent media and communication executives, has named GUND as one of the most trusted and influential brands in the United States.
GUND’s pioneering innovations in safety and manufacturing have continually set the standard for the plush industry. Gund was one of the first to introduce licensed plush through a partnership with Walt Disney properties, and became the first plush manufacturer to launch a national advertising campaign. Gotta Getta GUND, first introduced in the early 1980’s, remains one of the most recognized slogans in consumer marketing.
GUND has been nominated for and has won numerous Golden Teddy and TOBY Industry awards for plush design. Perhaps the greatest testament to GUND quality is the fact that several characters such as Snuffles™ and Tinkle Crinkle™ have appeared in stores for nearly 30 years. The extensive product line includes items for infants and children of all ages, as well as for adults and collectors.
By delivering quality, originality, and unparalleled huggability, GUND creates the most loved plush worldwide. For more than a century, GUND products have embodied the very spirit of a hug, making GUND the premier destination for premium plush.

95. Classic Pooh
Winnie-the-Pooh, also called Pooh Bear, is a fictional anthropomorphic bear created by A. A. Milne. The first collection of stories about the character was the book Winnie-the-Pooh (1926), and this was followed by The House at Pooh Corner (1928). Milne also included a poem about the bear in the children’s verse book When We Were Very Young (1924) and many more in Now We Are Six (1927). All four volumes were illustrated by E. H. Shepard.
The hyphens in the character's name were later dropped when The Walt Disney Company adapted the Pooh stories into a series of Disney features that became one of its most successful franchises.
The Pooh stories have been translated into many languages, including Alexander Lenard's Latin translation, Winnie ille Pu, which was first published in 1958, and, in 1960, became the only Latin book ever to have been featured on the New York Times Best Seller List.
In popular film adaptations, Pooh Bear has been voiced by actors Sterling Holloway, Hal Smith and Jim Cummings in English, Yevgeny Leonov in Russian, and Shun Yashiro and Sukekiyo Kameyama in Japanese.
