It started out as a simple hobby when, lo and behold, I realized I have just accumulated 20,000 distinct toy characters in my collection... and the number is still growing. This blog is a great space to share to others just how amazing some of these characters are especially the ones that may have been forgotten or perhaps even those deemed insignificant. Visit Percy's World of Toys as often as you can and witness how the list progresses right before your eyes. Enjoy.

4212. Badtz-Maru
Copyright 1993 1997
Badtz-Maru, is one of the many characters produced by Japanese corporation Sanrio. Unlike the more popular Hello Kitty, Badtz-Maru has an attitude and is one of the few characters that is marketed to both males and females.
Name: Badtz-Maru
Japanese Name: バッドばつ丸 (bad batsu maru)
Birthday: April 1, 1993 (April Fools Day)
Place of birth: Oahu, Hawaii
Species: Penguin
Pet: Alligator named Pochi
Friends: Panda, a female Giant Panda who always is seen in a short frilly skirt, and Hana Maru, a male white seal.
Family: Papa (blue penguin), Mama (pink penguin), Bad Twins (black younger siblings), and Bad Tsunko (pink younger sister who often wears a nurse uniform).
School: Gorgeous Academy, enrolled in the 1st grade
Residence: Gorgeoustown, lives with mother and pinball-playing father
Description: "Has dreams of greatness when he grows up, but for now he rolls his eyes at his humorous life in Gorgeoustown."
In Japanese "badtz" (batsu) is a term for "X", the cross signifying a wrong answer. "Maru" means circle or "O", and signifies a correct answer. So, his name is like "wrong-correct," and is frequently represented by "XO". Indeed, with his friends Pandaba and Hana Maru, Badtz runs the mischievous XO clan. Badtz-Maru has many different facial expressions and poses, but he is classically recognized for pulling one eye down and sticking out his tongue.
While Badtz-Maru seems perpetually stuck in the first grade, he has dreams of becoming "the boss, of everything" when he grows up. "A bit selfish, Badtz-Maru tends to make fun of things he thinks are silly. This mischievous little penguin loves to fight for the wrong side. His hobby is collecting pictures of movie stars who play bad guys."
Badtz-Maru has two best friends, who are often found accompanying him. Pandaba is a female Panda born on August 8. She was born in Iwayama (lit. Rocky Mountain), China. Pandaba likes to listen to rap music. She has a skill of eating Shumai, a Chinese steamed meat dumpling, in speed-eating contests. (One time she ate 100!) Hana Maru was born one day before Pandaba on August 7. He is a white seal born in Kokuritsu Hospital located in London. He can do ball acrobatics and likes gardening. In Japanese, he is called Good Hana Maru, in contrast to Bad Badtz-Maru. A 'hanamaru' is a swirly and elaborate circle-mark, signifying not just a correct answer but a very good one. It is used as a star would be in Western culture.
In addition to Hana Maru and Pandaba, Badtz also is close with Hanatare Kame (a small blue turtle), Soga Iruka (a white dolphin), Ogawa Same Otto (a blue shark), Nogaki Goroo (a small white bird), Mochizuki Anko (a black fish), and Kobun (blue henchman of his father).
Badtz-Maru has gone through many product lines since his release at Sanrio. While he has many fewer releases than Hello Kitty, he has been a staple character found in almost all stores worldwide. He has been portrayed as an astronaut, motorcyclist, DJ, camouflage monster, basketball player, boxer, and others. His products range from typical stationery supplies (eg. pens, notebooks, erasers, pencil cases ...) to more novel items (eg. cd players, guitars, license plate frames ...).
Badtz-Maru was the official Mascot for the 2006 FIBA World Championship of basketball, which was held in Japan.

3785. Cinnamoroll
Cinnamoroll, born on March 6, 2002 on a cloud far up in the sky, is a white puppy with long ears that enable him to fly. He has blue eyes, and a plump and curly tail that resembles a cinnamon roll.[8] He starred in his own anime movie which was released in December 2007. In the story, the owner of Cafe Cinnamon, a little cafe, looked up and saw a white puppy floating out of the sky like a fluffy cloud. The owner thought, “I wonder if he came because he smelled my cinnamon rolls.” The puppy had a curly tail just like a cinnamon roll, so she called him Cinnamoroll. His friends are named Milk, Cappucino, Espresso, Mocha and Chiffon.

3659. Baku
Baku is a purple tapir and Kuromi's sidekick with the ability to fly. He, in some episodes, appears to have a crush on Kuromi, and is often victim to Kuromi's anger. Kuromi is frequently very physically abusive to him, but regardless, she truly does love him, although despite the fact that they're both animals, they have a master-pet relationship.
Like Kuromi, Baku has a journal where he writes down his moments with her. Hiiragi burns it in the middle of the first season, but he somehow retrieves it in the second season when they break out of jail.
His birthday is confirmed to be on February 29. His name is a bit of a pun: in Japanese, baku could mean a tapir or a dream-eating creature of Japanese mythology. In one episode he has a crush on Uta. He does appear to have a conscience. On one occasion, he was seen delivering newspapers and giving rides to children. Baku has the ability to sniff out Black Notes, and whenever a new one is obtained, Kuromi skewers it with a magical stick and Baku eats it for safekeeping. Baku first met Kuromi at a beach in Mari Land. Baku usually says "Zona" at the end of his sentences, a lot like a catchphrase which is common of anime characters.
Baku is voice by Noboru Maeda.
Onegai My Melody is an Japanese anime series based on the Sanrio character, My Melody. Produced by Studio Comet, it ran 3 April 2005 to 26 March 2006 on Animax, TV Osaka and TV Tokyo, spanning 52 episodes. A sequel, Onegai My Melody ~Kuru Kuru Shuffle!~, ran 2 April 2006 to 23 March 2007. With its next sequel, Onegai My Melody Sukkiri♪, each episode was cut to 10 minutes. That series was followed by a third sequel, Onegai My Melody Kirara, which ran April 2008 to March 2009. This series was also aired across Japan by TV Osaka and TV Tokyo. However, Sanrio currently has no plans to release this series in North America due to the controversy it caused in Japan. The anime series ended on March 30, 2009, and was replaced by the Jewelpet anime in its timeslot.

3139. Sanrio Orange Cat
Sanrio 1991 2008 Creata Promotion HK Ltd 2005 McDonalds Happy Meal
Sanrio Co., Ltd. (株式会社サンリオ Kabushiki-kaisha Sanrio?) is a Japanese company that designs, licenses and produces products focusing on the kawaii (cute) segment of Japanese popular culture. Their products include stationery, school supplies, gifts and accessories that are sold worldwide and at specialty brand retail stores in Japan. Sanrio's best known character is Hello Kitty, a white cat with red bow and no visible mouth, one of the most successful marketing brands in the world.
Besides selling character goods, Sanrio takes part in movie production and publishing. They own the rights to the Peanuts characters in Japan. Their animatronics branch, called Kokoro Company, Ltd. ("Kokoro" being Japanese for "heart"), is best known for the Actroid android. They participate in the fast food industry, running a franchise of KFC in Saitama.
Sanrio was founded by Shintaro Tsuji as the Yamanashi Silk Company in 1960, using 1 million yen in capital. In 1962, Tsuji expanded his enterprise from silk to rubber sandals with flowers painted on them. Tsuji noted the profits gained by simply adding a cute design to the sandals and hired cartoonists to design cute characters for his merchandise in response. In 1973 the company was officially established under the name "Sanrio". The company's European website says the name comes from the Spanish words san (holy) and río (river.) The book korega Sanrio no himitsu desu (これがサンリオの秘密です?) or This is the Sanrio Company Secret gives another origin of the name. According to this book, Tsuji, Sanrio's founder, said that Yamanashi, part of the company's former name, has an alternative on'yomi reading of sanri. The remaining o was added from the ou sound people make when they are excited.
The company produced a line of character merchandise around gift-giving occasions. Hello Kitty was added to the lineup of early Sanrio characters in 1974 and the first related merchandise was released the following year. The popular mouthless feline has had both peaks and drops in sales over the years, but always has been the highest contributor to Sanrio's sales. Other notably popular characters through the years have been The Little Twin Stars (created by Mr. Tsuji himself), My Melody, Keroppi, Tuxedo Sam, Badtz-Maru, Chococat, Cinnamoroll, Sugarbunnies and Jewelpet. Sanrio constantly adds new characters to its lineup (up to three a year), so some of the older characters go into retirement. For a short time, Osamu Tezuka's baby unicorn character Unico, who starred in two feature-length anime movies in the early 1980s, was also part of the Sanrio empire; however, the rights to Unico shifted to Osamu Tezuka's own company after Tezuka's death in 1989.
In late 2003, Sanrio won the "Top Brand with a Conscience" award from the Medinge Group of Sweden for its communication principles. The company has partnered with UNICEF since 1984. In 2006, Sanrio launched Sanrio Digital together with Typhoon Games to expand to the Internet, online games and mobile services. 2010 was Sanrio's 50th anniversary. In conjuncture with this, Build-A-Bear Workshop released limited edition stuffed toys of several Sanrio characters, including Hello Kitty, Chococat, My Melody and Keroppi.
Hello Kitty is alleged to be drawn in a similar style to the rabbit Miffy. On August 26, 2010, Mercis BV, representing Miffy's creator Dick Bruna, brought suit against Sanrio with the claim that one of Hello Kitty's companion characters, a rabbit named Cathy, infringes on the copyright and trademark of Miffy. On November 2, 2010, a Dutch court ruled against Sanrio and ordered the company to stop marketing Cathy products in Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.Following the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Sanrio and Mercis reached an out-of-court settlement on June 7, 2011 for Sanrio to halt production worldwide of merchandise that feature Cathy. Instead of continuing the court battle, the two companies will donate the legal fees to help the earthquake victims

2690. Hello Kitty
This Hello Kitty is one of the five figures found free on every Kellogg's Fruity Loops Cereals. The five Hello Kitty spells out the word KITTY. This is a rare collection of Hello Kittys as this is the first time I saw Hello Kitty in chef costume. Is this indicative of another career change for our favorite feline friend? Anyway, since I bought the Fruity Loops last Saturday, August the 13th of 2011, my nephews and a niece and myself of course had a fun and colorful breakfast on the Sunday the following day. Nothing beats a morning with Kellogg's Fruity Loops and seeing the smiling and wide eyed faces of the kids...it's like Christmas mornings for the kiddos. Of course, I still get a cup of hot and good coffee after. My little adult indulgence. he he he

In Japanese, "badtz" (batsu) is a term for "X", the cross signifying a wrong answer. "Maru" means circle or "O", and signifies a correct answer. Thus, his name figuratively means "wrong-correct," and is frequently represented by "XO". Badtz-Maru has many different facial expressions and poses, but a common expression is of pulling one eye down and sticking out his tongue, a gesture equivalent to blowing a raspberry.
Badtz-Maru also has a few friends such as Hana-Maru, a friendly white seal. Hana-Maru is very kind in nature and is very helpful to all. Badtz-Maru also has another friend called Pandaba, a girl panda who wears a red bikini skirt and likes Badtz-Maru. Badtz-Maru also has a 'watch dog' named Pochi, but instead of having a real dog, Pochi is in fact, an alligator.
Badtz-Maru has gone through many product lines since his release at Sanrio in 1993. While he has far fewer releases than Hello Kitty, he has been a staple character found in almost all stores worldwide. He has been portrayed as an astronaut, motorcyclist, DJ, camouflage monster, basketball player, boxer, and others. Badtz-Maru was the official mascot for the 2006 FIBA World Championship of basketball, which was held in Japan.
2454. Coro Coro Kuririn
Kuririn is called the “Golden Hamster.” He was born in a pet store, and his birthday is actually the date when he arrived at the home of his female owner. His hat, an unknown flower, was taken by Kuririn from the basket where his owner put the flowers she collected. His eyes, which are shiny and bright (“Kuririn” in Japanese), aren’t that good. He likes to chew stuff, particularly since he’s still growing teeth.
Known to be shy and curious, he loves playing hide-and-seek, always looking out for the smallest of small places to hide. He can sometimes be stingy and also a little bit of a coward, but he is always good at looking for fun things to do. While he is curious, he tends to pay attention to things related to food and fun, and can be forgetful about the rest. When nobody is around, he and his girlfriend Sakura look out for collectible things, like seeds and buttons, which he keeps in his tissue paper bed. Aside from gathering his favorite stuff, he also likes to build houses. He also loves to sniff around, having a sensitive nose, and likes to smell new things. His favorite food are cookies and sunflower seeds.
