The Gold Ranger powers were found to be equivalent to the power of the Zeo Crystal, thus making the Gold Ranger literally the sixth Zeo Ranger.
Before Trey's reveal as the Gold Ranger, three red herrings were used. Billy was the prime suspect (Some theories speculate that he was actually working on a mystery project, presumably the Turbo powers), Tommy's brother David, and finally (and surprisingly) Skull.
Trey's name comes from the Latin word meaning "three."
Although he is not a Black Ranger by name, his suit is primarily Black, so he may be considered a black ranger like his Sentai counterpart.
If he is considered a Black Ranger, then he is the second non-human Black Ranger after Corcus, followed by Anubis Cruger.
